Carbohydrates are seen as the enemy in most diets and a big no no in any quest to live a healthy life, which starts with what you eat. That being said, there are good carbs and bad carbs, as carbohydrates in your diet are essential for muscle growth, almost as much as protein. And in all fairness, many of the carbs labeled “bad” really do nothing but increase the risk for major health risks if consumed in mass quantities, so cutting them all together is probably for the best.
However, there are a number of carbs that are labeled bad but have been given these labels undeservedly. I’m here to set the record straight and fill you in on why some of these carbs are actually quite good for you.
Lets start off with corn; corn has often been one of the first foods uttered when talking about “bad” carbs. Much of the reason behind corn being labeled as a bad carb is due to the fact that it’s frequently found in packaged, processed food that can be void of nutrients, and also because it’s not readily broken down in the body so it doesn’t serve that much purpose when eating it. In actuality, corn is a healthy whole grain and should be part of your diet at least sparingly. A good source of fiber, it aids in digestion and has antioxidant properties.
Top of the bad carb list has to be bread. Some choose to wipe it out all together and some choose to stick with whole wheat which is a little healthier. Sourdough usually gets the heave ho without a second glance. Because sourdough is made through a process of fermentation, it contains beneficial bacteria known as probiotics that help the GI tract, and digestion. Not such a bad carb after all.
Believe it or not, many people are also opting to kick bananas to the curb. Sometimes labeled as a source of bad carbs due to the high amounts of sugar. this is unfortunate because the banana is a good source of vitamin B6, manganese, potassium, and fiber.
